Off-Grid Utah Itineraries

Every itinerary here is built the same way: string together a few days of real driving, real daytime stops, and free or cheap boondocking overnight sites already written up on this site. No developed-campground reservations required, though we'll flag it when a fee site is the only sane option.

Each itinerary opens with a rig suitability line, because "boondocking" means something different in a Sprinter van than it does towing a 34-foot fifth wheel. Read that line first — it'll tell you whether an itinerary is a good match for your rig or a route to save for a smaller vehicle.

The itineraries

• Volcanoes, Lava Tubes & Desert Oddities — A Central Utah loop through a volcanic crater and a genuinely obscure lava tube system almost nobody's heard of. Best for: vans, trucks, most trailers.
• Hidden San Rafael Swell — Ancient rock art and a canyon rim overlook that rivals the Grand Canyon in miniature, without the crowds. Best for: vans, trucks, high-clearance rigs; trailers need to pick their route carefully.
• Bears Ears Rock Art & Canyon Country — Newspaper Rock, Comb Wash, and the cliff-edge views at Muley Point, with an explicit warning about which road to skip in a big rig. Best for: most rigs, with one notable exception.
• Flaming Gorge Geology Loop — Folded, uplifted rock and bighorn sheep on a paved loop road, with free Forest Service camping on both ends. Best for: everything, including full-size RVs and fifth wheels.
• High Uinta Alpine Loop — Lakes, granite, and lodgepole pine along the Mirror Lake Highway corridor. Best for: vans and trucks on the rougher spurs; RVs and trailers on the highway-adjacent sites.
• Reservoir Basecamp Circuit — An easy, family-friendly loop between three of Utah's best fishing reservoirs. Best for: everything, including fifth wheels.
• Zion & Bryce Red Rock Classic — The two biggest national park names in southern Utah, with free camping filling in the gaps between them. Best for: most rigs, with a couple of tight-road exceptions noted.
